Safeguarding or Storing?
Your organization has rich media such as film and video that must be kept secure and protected from the effects of time, temperature and humidity. Selecting the right location for housing and preserving these items defines the difference between safeguarding them and merely storing them. At Underground Archives, our highly secure subsurface vaults are where security and preservation meet.
Film and Media Vaults
Safeguarding photographic materials like film requires more than just a secluded closet or file room. The risk of decomposition of photographic materials is significant, particularly if they are not handled in an appropriate manner and under the right conditions.
The international standards organization (ISO) has developed and published standards that establish a “best practices” model for safeguarding imaging materials. These standards include temperature and humidity specifications, specifications for the construction of storage enclosures, as well as guidelines for air quality and light exposure. These factors vary based upon the required length of preservation, for example medium-term (longer than 10 years) and extended term (up to 500 years).
At Underground Archives, we believe that complying with the ISO standards is the right way to provide our customers maximum protection for their irreplaceable assets.
What happens outside the vault is as important as the environment inside. All of our storage vaults are located underground and are protected by state-of-the-art security protocols. A strategy for total protection should also incorporate meaningful geographic separation from the primary locations of your organization. Our secure vaults are located in Western Pennsylvania over 60 miles from the Pittsburgh metropolitan region.
The peace of mind that our film vaults provide is matched only by the level of services we offer to you to effectively manage these irreplaceable assets. We can provide you with analog to digital conversion, duplication, and inventory management services as well as a host of other services tailored to your specific needs.
Long Term Protection, by Design
All Underground Archives film vaults are located subsurface, allowing us to provide greater security for protecting your film assets. Being exclusively underground leverages nature’s inherent stability of temperature and humidity, aided by advanced environmental control systems required for long-term preservation of photographic materials. Our facilities provide video surveillance allowing for remote monitoring.
Realizing that your approach to managing film is unique to you, Underground Archives will design a storage and preservation solution specifically for your organization.
